Why Golgotha

Golgotha is expressed both symbolically and prophetically. It is symbolic because believers are called to lead life as temporal residence, pilgrims and ambassadors, hence our lives and legacy must ultimately have greater eternal emphasis and consequence.

There are eternal realities that were given expression and witness at the crucifixion of Christ that happened at Golgotha, also known as Calvary.

    Love

    Love was expressed in the purest and to the highest level, in that a man gave His life for the salvation of humanity.

    Forgiveness

    At Golgotha the extent of forgiveness was revealed. In that moment His one prayer was that forgiveness be given to all men, including the ones who nailed Him to the cross.

    Justice

    The most superior revelation of God’s justice and judgement was expressed, in that our displeased God was appeased through the sacrifice on the cross, and there was redemption from the fall of Adam. It revealed an imbalance in the justice system of the world and the glory of the justice system of God. Death, hell and the grave received judgement at Golgotha, and so there was recompense for all of existence: the heavens and realms of God, the earth and realms of men, and beneath the earth and the realms of the fallen.

    Evil

    A man who knew no sin was chosen to be crucified over a robber by the governments of the day, having executive, judicial and legislative veto power, yet choosing to favour one already charged guilty over one who had not endured the jurisprudence of the day. They released a man on death row in spite of a man who knew no sin, proving the depth of depravity within the fallen nature of all men.

Prophetic implications of Golgotha

Through the epochs of human history, from creation after the fall of the first Adam, the promise of God to the woman was that her seed would bruise the head of the serpent. In history it was at Golgotha that God provided a lamb as a sacrifice in stead of Abraham’s son. It was also at Golgotha that David slew Goliath and buried his skull.

It was at Golgotha that Jesus the Son of God was crucified, and so the certainty of the believer’s victory over all things was established and perfected. When we look to the one who was crucified for our sakes and believe, we are justified, we are accepted, and we become members again, one with Christ and one in the beloved precious Holy Spirit, experiencing the love of God anew in all excellence.

This is Faith. This is Hope. This is Love. This is purity. This is order, this is holiness. It is the picture of victory on every side, and this is the experience we promise. To the glory of God.
